Abstract

Objective: To estimate the prevention effect of a 2-year oral health program using fluoride topical and sealants in elementary school, Vientiane, Laos.

Methods: The subjects were assigned to an experimental group and a control group, respectively. For the experimental group, 1.23% acidulated phosphate fluoride (APF) gel was applied three times annually and sealant was applied to the permanent 1st molar of students in grade 1 to 5. Dental caries was examined by using digital single-lens reflex camera. Data (2-year) from the experimental group were compared to that of the control group.

Results: After using fluoride topical application and sealant with mixed dentition, decayed and filled permanent tooth (DFT) and decayed and filled permanent tooth surface (DFS) indices of the control group and the experimental group were not significantly (p£¾0.05) different. The decayed, filled and missing permanent tooth (DMFT) and decayed, filled and missing permanent tooth surface (DMFS) indices for permanent dentition between the two groups were not significantly (p£¾0.05) different either. Based on DMFT indices, the prevention effect of the program was estimated to be 39.3% in second grade, 15.5% in third grade, 25.9% in fourth grade, and 22.7% in fifth grade. Based on DMFS indices, the prevention effect of the program was 42.4% in second grade, 36.5% in third grade, 27.9% in fourth grade, and 21.2% in fifth grade.

Conclusion: Using 1.23% APF gel three times annually for two years with sealant for permanent 1st molar of students in grade 1 to 5 failed to have significant prevention effect against dental caries based on DFT and DFS indices or DMFT and DMFS indices of permanent dentition. Continuously using fluoride with sealant might be more effective in preventing dental caries for the subjects.
